ABOUT US

Giving Back & Sustainability

At Hornbill Treks & Safaris, “giving back” isn’t just talk–it’s a part of who we are.  As a team of Ugandans and Americans, we have a longstanding commitment to giving back and supporting community action in Uganda.  (In fact, it was through their work with a local secondary school that Hornbill co-founders Andrew and Elizabeth first met.)

Below, learn more about how your safari supports the local community & wildlife conservation efforts.

Community & Education

Since its founding, Hornbill Treks & Safaris has been committed to supporting the education of vulnerable youth in Uganda, and our travelers are invited to pack for a purpose on their trip, or visit our partner schools as part of their journey.

  • Awegys Secondary School was  started by the mother of Hornbill co-founder Andrew Wegoye.  Alice Wegoye, a former teacher and administrator, came out of retirement when no other secondary school existed in her village and turned her home into a school.

What began with four students taught in her own living room has grown to educate hundreds of students and now includes classrooms, a library, a science lab, dormitories, a village water well, and a village clinic.  The school provides sponsorships for local youth in need, including children affected by poverty and HIV/AIDS.

  • Hornbill Treks & Safaris also provides support to Kigo Primary School in Uganda.  Located across from Awegys Secondary School, Kigo Primary School provides an education to several hundred grade-school students.

By traveling with Hornbill Treks & Safaris, you are supporting the education and health of vulnerable youth in Uganda.  The founders of Hornbill also continue to support these schools, their students, and the surrounding village through regular donations and volunteer work.

Pack for a Purpose

We are proud members of Pack for a Purpose, an initiative that allows travelers like you to make a lasting impact in the community at your travel destination. When traveling with us to Uganda, if you save just a few kilos of space in your suitcase and take supplies for the projects we support in need, you’ll make a priceless impact in the lives of our local children and families. Please click here to see what supplies are needed for our project/projects.

Kibira Project

Deforestation is one of the main causes of animals’ habitat loss, which leads to the endangerment and even extinction of the very species we want to protect.   Planting trees not only helps fight deforestation within Uganda, but also helps offset the carbon footprint of international air travel.

We have a deep-rooted commitment to the environment and its conservation. For every guest that travels with Hornbill Treks & Safaris, we plant a tree and donate to local conservation causes. Whether it’s preventing habitat loss in Uganda, educating communities that live near the national parks, or protecting the country’s native wildlife, we’re dedicated to providing a greener world for generations to come.
